Smart, passionate and somewhat biased commentary about the Montreal Canadiens (HABS) from a lifelong fan now living in Toronto (LeafLand).

Back to the Future — Again!!

GM Bergevin pulls trigger on deal with Dallas Stars trading Erik Cole for Michael Ryder and 3rd round pick----------------------------------I was just about to get into the shower after a hard "insanity" workout. Then I heard from the television downstairs on RDS saying the Canadiens made a trade today. My immediate thought was "...oh what draft pick and prospect now!?"But then I was shocked to hear the Habs traded big power forward Erik Cole with two more years on his four year 18 million dollar contract to the Dallas Stars for Michael Ryder and a third round pick!Wow! Was I blown…

Habs Knock Off Rangers at MSG

Canadiens extend winning streak to five games downing New York Rangers 3-1 for their first win in NYC in five tries------------------------Remember last week when the Habs kept blowing third period leads?Remember last week when the Habs kept losing third periods?Remember last week when after those games, Michel Therrien said that his team needed to learn how to win!?Well after some tight, one goal games and a few nailbiters thrown in, it appears as if the 2013 Montreal Canadiens will win the Stanley Cup have learned how to win. Or better yet, they're finding ways to win.Carey Price celebrates Raphael Diaz's…

Florida Dreaming

Habs beat Panthers in OT 1-0 to take all four points in the sunshine state---------------------------------It wasn't the prettiest of games. But in the end, it's the two points that matter. In a tilt that at times was a complete snoozefest, in front of a crowd that consisted mostly of Montreal Canadiens fans, the Habs were able to sneak out of Florida with all four points by beating the Alex Kovalev-led Panthers 1-0 in OT on a dirty goal by Rene Bourque.Kind of makes you forget that Michael Cammalackey guy, eh?Power forward Rene Bourque celebrates with Josh Gorges and Alex Galchenyuk after…

SUPERBOWL WEEKEND JUST SUPER FOR HABS

Canadiens Collect Four Points in Back-To-Back This WeekendCoach Michel Therrien went on the record saying he wanted his team to send a message after losing 5-1 this past week in Ottawa.Well I think the team received the memo. Two strong team wins against divisional rivals the Buffalo Sabres and Ottawa Senators put your Montreal Canadiens in fourth spot in the Eastern Conference. And if you want to get technical about it, the Habs with 12 points are tied with the Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning -- and the Pens have played one more game but get the nod because they lead…

Gilmour Sighting and The Game

So one of our brethren Habs Fan in LeafLand sent me this story: last week he and his party were waiting for their table at a nice restaurant here in Toronto and the folks who were just leaving included one Dougie Gilmour. Yes that Doug Gilmour, the one who starred with the Flames and Leafs, before playing (somewhat admirably even if he bleeds blue and white) with the Habs.As Gilmour is leaving, someone asks him: "Hey didn't you play for the Leafs?"He smiles and utters some friendly thank yous through some burps...Anonymous Habs Fan in LeafLand: "Wait! You also played…

Markov, Draft and Laffs

So the Habs as a team have decided they do have pride, they do care, they do want to win. And it actually looks like they're having fun again. Better late than never I guess. How else do you describe 7 points out of a possible 8 when the season is gone gone gone... I mean lost!?I'm so happy to see Pacioretty get to the 30 goal mark and Erik Cole now with 27 and closing in fast.It seems lately they're the only ones that score, along with Desharnais and Subban.I'm a bit concerned though. Now the Canadiens have 67 points and…

Groundhog Day Habs Style

Yesterday was Groundhog Day. How fitting was that given the Canadiens did what they seem to be good at doing this year, over and over... and over? That is of course, losing a game where on 2 separate occasions they were up by 2 goals.Punxsutawney Phil. This cute and well fed little critter saw his shadow yesterday. We saw the Habs's season go straight to the devil based on another repeat performance. When will this stop? Certainly not this year. Yes, it's all about next year folks. I'm fine with it too. Sure I wanted to be bold and brash and…

Top 5 Pick, Here We Come!!

Wasted! No I'm not talking about me... well maybe a little bit. It's true. I'm wasted for having wasted my time watching last night's 3-1 loss to the Buffalo Sabres. What I mean is wasted (i.e. opportunity)... again! The Habs continue to waste any opportunities they have to crawl back into the playoff hunt.Pricer had a solid outing for his team, but geez! Score some goals for the guy. Pic: Dario Ayala, The GazetteHere they are, at home and fresh from the All-Star break. Everyone's happy and feeling good coming after 2 solid wins with the last being the 7-2 drubbing of…

Enjoy It!!

Montreal, Quebec. Was that your 2012 Canadiens or the 1977 flying Frenchmen??A resounding 7-2 victory over the NHL-tops Detroit Red Wings does the Habs body good. This really was a classic Original Six matchup. The Habs clobbered the Wings just like dem old times! Bourque opened the scoring with a good ol' dirty goal, driving the net hard while the rejuvenated but still goal-less Scotty Gomez showed some speed and fed the puck into the crease before bouncing off of Bourque's leg. Alexei Emelin congratulated by his teammates after scoring his first NHL goal against the Detroit Red Wings. Habs won the…

A Familiar Refrain

Everyone all together now:One-two-three, Habs take the lead.Four-five-six, their opponents tie it late.Seven-eight-nine, nothing in overtime.Ten-eleven-twelve, Habs in shootout hell.Scotty Gomez getting rubbed out along the boards. He's good at that.Peter Budaj made the start in Pittsburgh last night and even with two separate two goal leads, the result was the same. The Penguins tied the game with less than 3 minutes left and we could all predict the final result from there.I for one was hoping the team would press hard in the five minute OT period to do anything to avoid going to a shootout.Another shorthanded goal allowed,…

Cammalackey!!?? Buh bye.

Professional athletes make a lot of money. Crazy money. They also get privileges most of us never get to experience: meeting the great people; tables at restaurants; women; fame; women; did I say women? -- and other assorted perks. You know. The good life. Ahh... it's good to be the King.Pro hockey players get to play a game which I suppose they love. Why else put your body's through that punishment!? Oh yeah, the money, right. Hockey is a game that I pay to play. And watch. Because I love it.Pro hockey players also for all intent and purpose get paid handsomely to stay…

Midseason Ramblings

It's amazing what one decisive win can do.But one win does not make a season. And as the 2011-2012 Montreal Canadiens reach the halfway mark tonight against the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Habs sit in 13th place in the Eastern Conference.Yet many of the Montreal Canadiens media and pundits are now beginning to laud the work of interim Head Coach Randy Cunneyworth as they begin to see his stamp on this team, a stamp that many seem to be onside with. If only Canada Post could get into the action, eh? Geoff Molson didn't help things with his statement about…

Hard Reboot

After losing five straight games, four with Randy Cunneyworth as Head Coach, the Canadiens to a man could go home and take some time during the Xmas break to recharge, refocus and think about what they need to do to get back to winning ways and try to give themselves a chance at playing in the 2012 postseason.Erik Cole celebrates his powerplay goal with Tomas Plekanec last night in Ottawa. Martin’s Firing Needs to Produce Results

The axe has fallen. The head has rolled. The open letter from Habs Fan in LeafLand to GM Pierre Gauthier... received and apparently, heard.Habs Fan in LeafLand poster "Anonymous," as did much of Habs nation, finally got their wish.Jacques Martin is out as head coach of the Montreal Canadiens after 2 1/2 seasons. Randy Cunneyworth steps as interim head coach."It's disappointing. We've been underachieving for the entire season. Jacques' not the reason we weren't winning games," an ashen faced Erik Cole said this morning. "This is a good wakeup call to us here in the room that we have to play better." And better play,…

500 Hockey = No Playoffs

The Habs picked up a big two points yesterday afternoon in Los Angeles with a 2-1 win over the Kings. That's good.Louis Leblanc picked up his first point in the NHL on a sweet play with Kostitsyn and Eller, and now has more points than Aaron Palushaj -- who was sent back to Hamilton today. That was really good. The Habs ended their western swing with 3 out of a possible 6 points. That's not good enough. The team averted a total disaster by winning yesterday but threw away valuable points in San Jose the previous game. The late 3rd period tying goal by the…
